If you’re like most of us who have been fixated on basketball lately and the run up to Championship Week and March Madness, you probably didn’t realize that baseball – at the college level, at least – is already three weeks into its season. What’s more, in a little over a week, teams in the Big 12 begin play against conference opponents.
What follows is a quick numerical examination of Big 12 baseball to help get you up to speed on what has taken place over the opening three weeks of the 2013 season:
0 – Not a number that is typically associated with winning, but that was the number of losses that conference-leading Oklahoma had through the Sooners first 10 games of the season. OU suffered its first loss of the season in the middle game of a three-game series with Pepperdine last weekend. The Sooners won two out of three at home over the Wave to run their season record to 11-1.
2 – The number of Big 12 schools ranked in the top 30 in the Baseball America weekly poll. Oklahoma is ranked No. 10 in this week’s poll; Oklahoma State (9-2) is at No. 26.
3 – Ranked teams Oklahoma and Texas Tech combined will face in games this weekend. OU will meet No. 13 UCLA on Saturday and 25th-ranked Notre Dame on Sunday (both games in Los Angeles. Texas Tech (7-5) will visit Tucson for three games against defending national champion and 18th-ranked Arizona.
4 – Times in conerence history when Baylor has swept the Player and Pitcher of the Week awards in the same week. Bears infielder/outfielder Cal Towey and right-haned pitcher Max Garner were so honored this week.
11 – Kansas opened the season playing its first 11 games away from home. The Jayhawks will play their opening home series later this week when Niagra comes to Lawrence for four games.
17 – Both Texas’ Augie Garrido and Steve Smith at Baylor have been the head coaches at their respective schools as long as the Big 12 has been in existence (17 years). Garrido has been the head man at Texas since 1997 and Smith has been at Baylor, his alma mater, since the 1995 season.
26 – The number of home games Oklahoma State will play before the Cowboys go on the road for the first time. OSU will play its first game away from home on April 2 (against Oklahoma), followed by a three-game set at Kansas.
27 – The conference record for the most consecutive times reaching base in a season (held by Erich Weiss of Texas, in 2012). Oklahoma designated hitter Matt Oberste has hit safely in all 12 of the Sooners’ games this season.
41 – Wins needed by Augie Garrido to become the winningest coach in college baseball history at any level. Garrido has 1,853 career wins currently.
57 – Total wins by Big 12 teams this season vs. nonconference opponents, against 40 losses.
300 – Kansas State head coach Brad Hill is just one win shy of recording his 300th career win.
512 – League-leading batting average percentage of Baylor senior Nathan Orf, who has collected 21 hits in 41 plate appearances through games of March 4.
