Oklahoma is one of 10 teams from last season’s NCAA Basketball Tournament that are in the field announced for the 2013 Preseason Women’s National Invitation Tournament. The Sooners, who were plagued with injuries to key players this past season finished with a 24-11 overall record and advanced to the Sweet 16 before losing to Tennessee.
Under head coach Sherri Coale, the Lady Sooners have made 14 consecutive NCAA postseason appearances, including twice advancing to the Final Four. Several college basketball experts have singled out the Sooners as an early favorite to contend for the Big 12 title in 2013-14.
Besides Oklahoma, the other 15 teams in the Preseason WNIT field are Georgia State, Gonzaga, Idaho, IPPW, Louisville (which finished second to UConn in the 2013 NCAA Women’s Championship), Loyola University-Chicago, LSU, Mount St. Mary’s, North Carolina A&T, Quinnipiac, St. Joseph’s, Stephen F. Austin, Stetson, Tennessee Martin and Wichita State.
Two seasons ago, No. 1-ranked Baylor (with All-American Brittney Griner) defeated No. 2 Notre Dame. The Lady Bears finished 40-0 that season (2011-12) and were the national champions.
