With a dozen candidates on the preseason watch list for the 2013 Bronco Nagurski Trophy, the Big 12 could easily put together an All-Big 12 team.
The Nagurski Trophy is presented annually to the best defensive player in college football, and heading into this season, the list of candidates includes three each from both Oklahoma State and Texas. and two from TCU. All three of those teams are expected to be very good on defense this season, and now you know the reason why.
The Big 12 candidates are: Bryce Hager (Baylor); Ty Zimmerman (Kansas State); Aaron Colvin (Oklahoma); Calvin Barnett, Justin Gilbert and Shaun Lewis (all from Oklahoma State); Devonte Fields and Jason Verett (both of TCU); Quandre Diggs, Jordan Hicks and Jackson Jeffcoat (all three from Texas), and Kerry Hyder (Texas Tech).
Five former players from the Big 12 have won the Nagurski Trophy: Roy Williams of Oklahoma (2001), Derrick Strait, Oklahoma (2003), Derrick Johnson of Texas (2004), Brian Orakpo of Texas (2008) and Nebraska’s Ndamukong Suh (2009).
The Nagurski Trophy will be presented by the Charlotte Touchdown Club and the Football Writers Association of America on Dec. 3 in Charlotte, N.C.
