Three Big 12 defensive ends are among the 22 candidates on the preseason watch list for the 2013 Hendricks Award, which recognizes the best defensive end in college football.
Making the list from the Big 12 are Jackson Jeffcoat of Texas, Kerry Hyder of Texas Tech and TCU’s Devonte Fields. All three players were named in July to the 2013 Preseason All-Big 12 First Team, and Fields is the preseason pick of the media who cover the Big 12 as the Defensive Player of the Year.
This is the 12th year for the award, named after Ted Hendricks, college football’s first three-time, first-team All-American while playing at the University of Miami and went on to a successful 15-year career in the National Football League that included playing on four Super Bowl teams (three with the Oakland/Los Angeles Raiders and the Baltimore Colts).
Former Texas Longhorn defensive end Brian Orakpo won the award in 2008.
In addition to on-field expectations, criteria for the award includes community involvement and performance in the classroom.
The 2013 winner of the Hendricks Award will be announced on Dec. 11.
