The Big 12 players named to the Wooden Award preseason top-50 candidate list are Isaiah Austin and Cory Jefferson from Baylor, All-American Marcus Smart of Oklahoma State and Kansas freshmen Andrew Wiggins, Wayne Selden and Joel Emblid. The six candidates from the Big 12 is the third most among all conferences.
Now in its 38th year, the prozed Wooden Award is conferred upon college basketball’s most outstanding player. The winner also has to demonstrate that he is making progress toward a degree and maintaining a 2.0 grade point average.
The three first-year players from Kansas are tied for the most in consideration from any one school, and Baylor is one of seven schools who have two players on the watch list. The candidate list was selected in a preseason poll of national college basketball experts.
The original watch list will be re-evaluated at midseason and narrowed down to 20 names. The men’s and women’s winner of the 2014 Wooden Award will be announced the weekend of April 11-12. The 10-player Wooden Award All-America Team will be revealed the week of the Elite Eight round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.
