You couldn’t have scripted it any better. After 118 regular-season games and 88 contests pairing Big 12 teams one-on-one against each other, the Big 12 football race has come down to two must-watch games, with GameDay-like atmospheres, that will decide the conference champion.
Three one-loss teams (in league play) and a two-loss team, all nationally ranked, battling it out on a Championship Weekend for the right to raise the banner as 2013 Big 12 champion. It doesn’t get much better than that.
Oklahoma State, the preseason favorite of the Big 12 coaches to win the Big 12 in 2013, is ranked No. 6 in the current BCS standings; Baylor is ninth, Oklahoma 17th and Texas 25th.
Of the three teams that still have chance to capture the league crown in football, Baylor is the only team not to have won a football championship in the Big 12 era. In fact, third place was the highest previous finish for the Bears in football. Baylor does have seven championship banners, hawever, from its days in the Southwest Conference, heavily dominated by Texas, with 25 Soutwest Conference championships (19 of them outright).
The Longhorns have won three Big 12 championships in football (1996, 2005, 2009). Oklahoma State is seeking its second Big 12 football title. The Cowboys were champions in 2011.
Oklahoma, the Cowboys’ opponent on Saturday in the 108th renewal of “Bedlam” on the gridiron (the moniker given to Oklahoma-Oklahoma State athletic competition), leads the conference with eight championships in football since the Big 12 was formed in 1996. The Sooners own 41 league titles in football all-time and seven national championships, by far the most of any current conference team.
Here are a dozen more fun football facts and figures to whet your appetite for the two Saturday showdowns in the Big 12:
