Big 12 bowl week begins on Saturday when Kansas State takes on Michigan in the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl in Tempe, Ariz. Over the following seven days, all six of the Big 12 bowl teams for the 2013 season will be in action, concluding on Friday, Jan. 3 with the Cotton Bowl featuring Oklahoma State and former Big 12 team Missouri, now a member of the Southeastern Conference.

The Big 12 is participating in six postseason bowls this holiday season: Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl, Valero Alamo Bowl (Texas vs. Oregon), Holiday Bowl (Texas Tech vs. Arizona State), BCS Tostitos Fiesta Bowl (Baylor vs. Central Florida), BCS Allstate Sugar Bowl (Oklahoma vs. Alabama) and the AT&T Cotton Bowl.

The Big 12 is one of four conferences with two teams in Bowl Championship Series bowls in the final year of the BCS format. The others are the SEC (Auburn and Alabama), Big Ten (Ohio State and Michigan State) and the ACC (Florida State and Clemson). This is the sixth time the Big 12 has had two teams playing in BCS bowl games. Over the 16-year history of the BCS structure, the Big 12 has had 22 teams participate in BCS bowls, including seven national championship games.

Oklahoma leads the Big 12 with four appearances (2001, 2004, 2005, 2009) in the BCS National Championship game and won it in 2001 (the 2000 season). Texas has appeared two times (2006, 2010).

Opponents of Big 12 bowl teams have the best winning percentage of any of the major conferences.

Big 12 opponents’ record – 60-14, .810

SEC – 93-30, .756

ACC – 102-34, .750

Big Ten – 81-24, .717

Pac-12 – 76-34, 690

Current Big 12 teams have made a total of 274 a;;-time bowl appearances.

Big 12 schools have used 19 different starters at quarterback this season. Six of them were freshmen. Only two teams have had the same starter at quarterback through all 12 regular-season games (Baylor and Kansas State). Only three Big 12 teams have a senior starter at the quarterback position.

Because of the parity in the conference, eight lower-ranked teams have defeated a higher-ranked Big 12 opponent since 2011.

The Big 12 is one of three FBS leagues, and the only one among the major conferences, in which every team in the league had at least one conference win.
