Seven Big 12 baseball players have been named to 2014 preseason All-American teams.
Heading the preseason honorees from the Big 12 is Kansas State senior second baseman Ross Kivett, last year’s Player of the Year in the Big 12. Kivett, who batted .360 in 64 games for the Wildcats last season, fifth best in the Big 12, has been named to four preseason All-America teams (first team: Louisville Slugger, NCBWA and Perfect Game; Baseball America third team).
TCU junior left-handed starter Brandon Finnegan is a second-team All-American selection by Baseball America and a third-team preseason honoree by Louisville Slugger. Finnegan led the Horned Frogs with 88 strikeouts in 79.1 innings and a 3.18 ERA in 2013.
West Virginia right-handed pitcher Harrison Musgrave, also has been named to two preseason All-American teams. Louisville Slugger named the WVU starter to its second team, and the National College Baseball Writers tabbed him as a second-team selection. Musgrave was 9-1 last season with a 2.17 ERA in 14 starts for the Mountaineers.
Kansas State right-handed relief pitcher Jake Matthys is a third-team preseason All-America choice of Louisville Slugger. Kevin Cron, a junior first baseman for TCU was named to the Baseball America third team. TCU right-handed starter Preston Morrison, who led the conference with a 1.51 ERA in 107 innings last season, is an NCBWA third-team preseason selection.
The Big 12′s top hitter a season ago, Mark Payton, an outfielder for Texas, was named a third-team preseason All-American by NCBWA.
