The four represantives from the Big 12 are Kansas State senior second-baseman Ross Kivett, the Big 12 Player of the Year in 2013, teammates Brandon Finnegan and Kevin Cron of TCU and West Virginia left-handed pitcher Harrison Musgrave.
The four Big 12 players are among 60 college players from around the country named to the Golden Spikes preseason watch list.
Kivett helped lead Kansas State last season to its first conference title in baseball in 80 years. He is only the second player in Big 12 history to win the conference’s Player of the Year award his junior season and return for his senior campaign. Kivett led the Wildcats in hits (94) and runs scored (57) last season and hit for a .360 average. He was drafted in the 10th round of the 2013 MLB Draft by the Cleveland Indians, his hometown team.
TCU’s Finnegan, a southpaw starting pitcher, posted a 3.81 ERA a year ago in 15 starts. He has been named to three preseason All-America teams this year. His teammate, first-baseman Cron, comes into the 2014 season with a career batting average of .265. Cron has started 93 of 97 games as a Horned Frog.
Musgrave, the 2013 Big 12 Pitcher of the Year, was 9-1 as a starter for West Virginia last season, with an ERA of 2.17 and 81 strikeouts in 95.1 innings of work. The left-handed starter pitched three complete games last season.
The Golden Spikes Award is sponsored by USA Baseball and supported by Major League Baseball. The watch list for this year’s award will be reduced to 50 players in early April and the finalists will be named in early June.
