Four Big 12 relief specialists have made the National College Baseball Writers Preseason Stopper of the Year watch list.
Jordan Piche of Kansas, Jake Matthys of Kansas State, Brendan McCurry of Oklahoma State and Riley Ferrell of TCU are among 50 college baseball closers from all across the country named to the Stopper of the Year preseason watch list.
Piche was the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year last season and recorded 12 saves to lead the Big 12. His 1.68 ERA a year ago was the 19th best in the nation.
Matthys, a sophomore right-handed reliever, established Kansas State records last seas for wins and saves by a freshman. A 2013 Freshman All-American, Matthys finished 2013 with a record of 9-2, a 2.05 ERA and nine saves in 34 appearances.
Oklahoma State’s McCurry, a senior this season, had a record of 6-3 with eight saves and an ERA of 2.72. The right-hander recorded 35 strikeouts in 48.1 innings in 2013.
Ferrell, a sophomore right-hander, posted a 2.20 ERA and had three saves for TCU in 2013.
Ferrell and Matthys are two of 14 sophomores on the Stopper of the Year preseason list.
Four former Big 12 relief specialists have won the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award: J. Brent Cox of Texas (2005), Don Czyz of Kansas (2006), Chance Ruffin of Texas (2010) and Corey Knebel of Texas (2011).
The top 50 candidates will be reduced the week of April 21. At the end of the college baseball season, the national saves leader and four other closer candidates will be named as finalsts for the award.
