Andrew Wiggins of Kansas and DeAndre Kane of Iowa State have been named to the Sporting News All-America teams for the current season. Wiggins, the country’s No. 1 recruit this season, was named to the Sporting News second team, and Kane is a member of the third team.
Wiggins averaged 16.8 points a game this season, the most by a freshman in 2013-14, and scored 41 in the Jayhawks’ 91-85 loss to West Virginia last weekend. The 41 points was the most points by a Kansas player since 1991 and the second most by a freshman during the Big 12 era. Wiggins was naned the 2013-14 Big 12 Freshman of the Year by the conference coaches.
Kane, who transferred from Marshall for his final collegiate season, was Mr. Do Everything for Iowa State this season. He averaged 17.1 points, 6.7 rebounds and 5.9 assists in helping lead the Cyclones to their third consecutive 20-win season. Kane was the choice of the league coaches as Big 12 Newcomer of the Year this season.
Since the Big 12 was formed in 1996-97, 39 players from the conference have been named to Sporting News All-America teams, including more than one selection in eight of the years.
