While TCU waits and watches on the sidelines, Oklahoma State and Texas will battle in a winner-take-all single game for the spot opposite the Horned Frogs in Sunday’s Big 12 Baseball Championship final.
TCU is a perfect 3-0 in the postseason conference tournament after sending Baylor home on Saturday with a 4-1 win. It was the Horned Frogs’ second win over the seventh-seeded Bears in three days. Baylor dropped its opening-round game to TCU 8-5 and avoided elimination for two more games and a couple of wins before suffering its second loss in the double-elimination championship.
Texas held a 1-0 lead and looked like the were on there way to their third straight win in the Big 12 Championship before No, 1 seed Oklahoma State, the Big 12 regular-season champions, broke through for three scores in the bottom of the eighth to pull out a 3-1 victory to stay alive for another game. It stands to reason that a game with the second and third-best pitching staff’s in the conference would be a low-scoring affair, and this game certainly lived up to that.
Oklahoma State was able to find a way to pull out the victory despite not having its second-best hitter, junior Zach Fish, out with an ankle injury.
The victory was the Cowboys’ 44th of the season. Twenty-six of their 44 wins this season have been of the come-from-behind variety.
Oklahoma State has now won three of its four games with Texas this season, and the Cowboys will need at least one more if they hope to play No. 2 seed TCU in the championship game. OSU and Texas will play a game two on Saturday night. The winner will advance to meet TCU on Sunday; the loser will be sent home.
