Texas Women Runner-Ups In NCAA Outdoor Track Finals


They had to come from way back to do it, but the Texas Lady Longhorns came on in the final two day of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships like a Texas dust storm to finish second behind bitter rival Texas A&M.

The Texas women's track squad finished second in the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore., over the weekend. The Lady Longhorns also finished second in the NCAA Indoor Championships earlier this year.

Baylor was the highest finishing Big 12 team on the men’s side, ending up eighth in the team standings. The Texas men, ranked fifth nationally, was in third place after the first three days of the Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore., but the Longhorns failed to pick up any points on the final day and fell to 11th place.

The Texas women ended the 2014 season with Big 12 indoor and outdoor championships and a second-place finish in both the NCAA indoor and outdoor championships. To cap it all off, the Lady Longhorns are the top-ranked women’s team in the country.

Courtney Okolo of Texas won the women’s 400 meters and also was a member of the Longhorns 4×400-meters relay team that posted the second-best time in collegiate history (3:24.21) in winning the event.

Marielle Hall of Texas was the individual champion in the 5,000 meters in a winning time of 15:35.11.

The Big 12 swept both the men’s and women’s individual titles in the shot put. Ryan Crouser of Texas had a winning toss of 69-feet, 3 1/2 inches, and Christina Hillman of Iowa State won the women’s shot put crown with a distance of 58-feet, 2 inches. Hillman was the first Lady Cyclone to exceed 58 feet in outdoor competition,

The Big 12 has ruled the shot-put competition for the last several years. Crouser has won three consecutive NCAA outdoor championships, and this was the second in a row of Iowa State’s Hillman.

In individual events, the Big 12 earned six individual championships in this year’s outdoor championships. Six of the 10 teams from the Big 12 that qualified for the 2014 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships finished in the top 10 in the team standings.

Oregon, the host school for this year’s championships, won the team title on the men’s side, followed by Florida and Texas A&M.
