Two more preseason watch lists recognizing individual accomplishments in the 2014 college football season have been revealed.
The preseason candidates under consideration for the Mackey Award, which annually recognizes the best tight end in college football, include for Big 12 players, two of which wear the crimson and cream of the Oklahoma Sooners. One of the two Sooners on the Mackay watch list is former OU quarterback Blake Bell, who has changed positions for his final season at Oklahoma.
The 6-6, 259-pound Bell has the size and strength, along with good speed, to be successful at the tight end position.. He started a number of games at quarterback for the Sooners in 2013 and played prominent roles in OU’s victory at Notre Dame and the Sooners win at Oklahoma State. With redshirt sophomore Trevor Knight the OU starter at QB going into the 2014 season, Bell decided to switch to tight end, an area of immediate need for coach Bob Stoops and the Sooners.
Six Big 12 centers are on the Rimington Trophy watch list for this coming season. The Rimington Trophy, named after fromer Nebraska All-American Dave Rimington, honors the best center in college football.
Representing the Big 12 on the Rimington watch list are B.J. Finney of Kansas State, Dominic Espinosa of Texas, TCU’s Joey Hunt, Ty Darlington of Oklahoma and Tom Farniok of Iowa State. All but Darlington and Hunt are seniors.
