Seven Baylor Bears Top All-Big 12 Preseason Team

Seniors dominate the 2014 All-Big 12 Preseason Team, which also includes seven players from defending conference champion Baylor.

In addition to 13-man all-conference preseason offensive and defensive units, Big 12 media representative also voted on three individual categories. Baylor senior quarterback Bryce Petty was the media choice as Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. Defensive end Devonte Fields of TCU was the selection as Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, the second year in a row he has been the preseason choice in that category. Tyreek Hill, a wide receiver for Oklahoma State, was named Big 12 Preseason Newcomer of the Year.

Baylor placed four players on the preseason All-Big 12 offensive unit and three more on defense. Oklahoma and Kansas State each were represented with four selections on the preseason team, and TCU and Texas both had three players named.

Petty, the 2013 Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year, led Baylor to its first Big 12 championship in football last season. He set 17 school records in his first year as the Bears’ starting quarterback. For the 2013 season, the senior quarterback three for a Big 12-best 4,200 yards and 32 touchdowns, with just three interceptions. He also led the conference in total offense, averaging 339 yards per game.

Fields, just a sophomore, was the odds-on favorite as Defensive Player of the Year before the season started a year ago, but suffered a season-ending injury after just three games. He was the Big 12 Freshman Defensive Player of the Year in 2012.

Oklahoma State newcomer Hill comes to the Cowboys from Garden City (Kan.) Community College. In his sophomore season in 2012, Hill caught 32 passes for 532 yards and six touchdowns. He also gained 659 yards running the football. He has been enrolled at OSU since January and placed second in the 60-meter dash in the 2014 Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships.

The Preseason All-Big 12 Team consisted of 18 seniors, five juniors and three sophomores. Eight of the preseason selections were named to the 2013 All-Big 12 First Team; 11 others were second-team selections.
