OU Gets Media Nod As Big 12 Football Preseason No. 1

The Oklahoma Sooners have won eight Big 12 championships in football, and they are the pick of the media to garner a ninth in 2014.

The Sooners garnered 47 of the 56 first-place votes in the annual preseason poll of media representatives who cover or follow the teams in the Big 12. Baylor placed second in the preseason poll and received the remaining nine first-place votes.

Oklahoma has been picked to finish first in the conference and/or its division ten times in the 19 seasons in which the poll has been conducted.  Bob Stoops’ Sooners have picked as preseason No, 1 in the conference in four of the last five seasons. Oklahoma State was picked as preseason No. 1 a year ag0, with OU finishing second.

Behind Baylor in the Big 12 preseason media poll is Kansas State. closely followed by the Texas Longhorns. Oklahoma State, which finished in a three-way tie for second in the final standings a year ago is picked fifth, followed by Texas Tech, TCU, West Virginia, Iowa State and Kansas.

Oklahoma returns 20 starters from last season’s 11-win team that defeated two-time defending champion Alabama in the Sugar Bowl last January. The Sooners’ eight Big 12 championships is five more than the next best team in the league. Texas is next with three league titles in football and Kansas State has won two championships.

Defending Big 12 champion Baylor has 51 letterman returning, according to the team’s athletic website. Baylor had its best season in program history in 2013, winning a record 11 games. The Bears led the conference with seven selections to the All-Big 12 2014 preseason team.
