How The Big 12 Ranks In Pre-Preseason Football Top 25

In another week or so, USA Today and the Associated Press will come out with their annual preseason college football polls ranking the nation’s top 25 teams for the coming season.

We all know that the rankings at this time of the season before the first game has even been played don’t amount to much in the big scheme of things.

And now with the new College Football Playoff format in place for its inaugural year, the traditional top-25 polls will be superceded by a selection committee that will decide the four teams that will enter a playoff to determine the national champion for the 2014 season.

From the final whistle of the final bowl game ending the college football season until the opening kickoff some seven and a half months later commencing the start of a new season, the air waves, print media and the blogosphere are filled with all kinds of opinionated talk and predictions a plenty on who will be in and who will be out come the brand new college season.

Looking back on the end of the 2013 season, there is no question that Oklahoma’s stunning upset of two-time defending champion Alabama in the final Sugar Bowl game in the BCS era helped improve
d the Sooners’ stock in the eyes of the voting coaches and sports scribes in evaluating the Oklahoma prospects in the 2014 season.

Both USA Today and ESPN came out right after the 2013 bowl season with their first crack at what the college football top-25 landscape would look like for the 2014 season, Both polls had Oklahoma ranked highest of all the Big 12 teams, ranked No. 8 in both polls.

Athlon’s 2014 College Football preview magazine has the Sooners at No. 4, heading into the 2014 season, and Sporting News is the most ambitious of all of the preseason polls so far, with Oklahoma as the top-ranked team. Phil Steele has the Sooners at No. 4 in his annual college football preview publication.

Baylor is the next Big 12 team drawing the most preseason interest. The defending conference champions ranked 9th in Phil Steele’s 2014 preseason power poll, and Matt Hayes, college football editor at the Sporting News, has the Bears at No. 10 to begin the season. USA Today’s pre-preseason poll ranked the Bears No. 11 and the ESPN way-too-early 2014 college football poll ranked Baylor at No, 12.

CBS Sports had Baylor a spot ahead of Oklahoma, at No, 12, in its first-of-the year preseason projections, with the Sooners at No. 13.
