OU Ranked No, 3 In 2014 Football Coaches Poll

The talking season in college football is in full tilt, and on Wednesday, the first Amway Coaches Poll (formerly the USA Today Coaches Poll) of the 2014 season was released, with four Big 12 teams ranked in the preseason top 25, headed by Oklahoma at No, 3.

Baylor, the defending Big 12 champion, also was ranked in the preseason top 10 in the coaches’ poll, at No. 10. Two other Big 12 teams made the top 25 – Kansas State is No. 21 and the Texas Longhorns, under new head coach Charlie Strong, are at No, 24.

Bookending Oklahoma at No. 3 are Florida State, the defending national champions and the No. 1-ranked team in the Amway Preseason Coaches Poll, Alabama at No, 2, Oregon No. 4 and Auburn, runner-up to Florida State in the last BCS National Championship, is No, 5.

Oklahoma State received 56 votes, which would place the Cowboys five spots out of the top 25 at No, 30. TCU and Texas Tech also received votes in the Preseason Coaches Poll.

Only five teams received first place from the coaches who were polled. Florida State dominated the first-place ballots with 56 votes. Oklahoma was the only other team to receive more than one first-place vote. The Sooners were No. 1 on three ballots.

With four teams ranked in the Preseason Coaches Poll Top 25, the Big 12 was tied with the Atlantic Coast Conference among the major conferences. The Southeastern Conference placed seven teams in the top 25 to lead all conferences. The Pac-12 was second with six, followed by the Big Ten with five.

It has been widely speculated this offseason that Oklahoma’s high national ranking is largely because of the Sooners’  convincing two-touchdown win over two-time defending national champion Alabama in the Sugar Bowl last January.

OU head coach Bob Stoops agrees that the Sugar Bowl victory was a big plus for the Sooners in recruiting and building confidence throughout the postseason and in preparation for the coming season. But the Sooner coach also knows that his team has to go out and prove it is worthy of all the preseason recognition by how it performs on the field week in and week out.

“I think, like all experiences, you build off of them,” Stoops said at Big 12 Media Days in Dallas last week. “And you build off some that are negative, you build off some that are positive. In the end, we were fortunate that we were able to build, finish recruiting in a positive way. I think that really did give us a boost in the last week or two of recruiting. And then it also, I think, as much as anything, it inspired our players to really build on it in the winter in the way we trained, the way we went into spring and we had a fabulous summer. One of the best.”

Now August has rolled around, and the Big 12 football teams have begun teams have begun official practice sessions in preparation for the 2014 season. Soon we will see the results on the field, and that’s really the only evaluation that counts.
