The Baylor senior and preseason Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year came in at No. 7 on the ESPN Top 100 list.
Petty is one of four quarterbacks ranked among the top 10 players coming into the new college football season, which kicks off at the end of this month. Jameis Winston of defensing national champion Florida State and Marcus Mariota of Oregon, both quarterbacks, are the top two players in the ESPN Top 100 list. Ohio State’s Braxton Miller is the other quarterback ranked in the top 10.
Other Big 12 players who were included in ESPN’s Top 100 are: 41. defensive end Devonte Fields of TCU, 47. wide receiver Tyler Lockett of Kansas State, 52. linebacker Eric Striker of Oklahoma, 68. cornerback Quandre Diggs of Texas, 72. defensive end Cedric Reed of Texas, 81. quarterback Trevor Knight of Oklahoma, 90. running back Malcolm Brown of Texas, 91. offensive tackle Spencer Drango of Baylor and 96. running back Jonathan Gray of Texas.
Overall, four players from Texas were named to the top 100 list, three from Baylor, two from Oklahoma and one each from Kansas State and TCU. Seven of the 11 are offensive players (two QBs, two WRs, two RBs and an offensive lineman) and three are from the defensive side.
The voting panel for the ESPN Top 100 list was composed of 32 ESPN college football writers and editors. The voters were asked to rate the players on the basis of 1 through 10, with 10 being the highest. Players were rated on the basis of anticipated contributions during the 2014 college season.
