Sooner RB Joe Mixon Suspended For 2014 Season

Oklahoma freshman running back Joe Mixon has been suspended for the 2014 season.

Mixon, the No. 1 running back recruit in the country and the Sooners highest-ranked recruit in their 2014 class, was in Cleveland County District Court in Oklahoma City on Monday for his initial appearance on charges stemming from an alleged assault on a 20-year-old female University of Oklahoma student on July 25 at a local coffee shop just north of the OU campus.

The five-star recruit was charged with “one count of a misdemeanor “act resulting in gross injury,” according to court records obtained by the Oklahoma City Oklahoman.

The Oklahoman reported that the female victim alleged that Mixon punched her once in the face resulting in four broken bones

In a joint statement released by the university, OU athletic director Joe Castiglione and head coach Bob Stoops said:

“As the university has demonstrated in the past, we are committed to winning the right way. As an example to others, OU sets the highest possible standards for its student athletes, coaches and staff.”

Mixon, who hails from Oakley, Calif., will be permitted to continue as a student at OU and still receive financial aid. He has not taken part in practice or team activities since the incident, which happened just a few days before the beginning of preseason practice sessions.

The one-year suspension excludes Mixon from all team activities, including being removed from the team roster.
