Texas Longhorns Sweep Men’s, Women’s Big 12 Outdoor Track Championships

Not since 2006 has one Big 12 team captured the men’s and women’s championships in both the conference Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The Texas Longhorns accomplished that track and field grand slam over the weekend by winning the 2015 Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field title.

The Longhorn men beat out Texas Tech and Oklahoma, while the women finished ahead of Kansas State and the Texas Tech women.

Texas Tech junior Kole Wheldon, who won the men’s hammer throw and finished second in both the shot put and discus competition, took high-point honors among the men. Kansas State’s Akele Jones was the high-point individual on the women’s side. She also took top honors in the Big 12 Indoor Track & Field Championships earlier this year.

Notable performances during the three-day event at Iowa State’s Cyclone Sports Complex include Texas sprinter Morolake Akinosun, who won both the women’s 60-meter dash and the 200-meter dash. The Longhorns also had three other runners place in the 200 for a total of 23 team points.

Kansas hurdler Michael Stigler was the 400-meter hurdles champion for the fourth time in his career. Currently ranked No, 2 in the world in the event, Stigler is only the fourth Big 12 track and field athlete to win the same event four times in the conference champsionships.

Baylor’s Trayvon Bromell won gold in the men’s 100 meters and also led the finalists to the tape in the 200 meters.

Oklahoma State distance runners Natalja Piliusina and Chad Noelle captured gold in the women’s and men’s 1500 meters, respectively.
